Total Pension Plan Performance

The North Carolina Retirement System has a long-term objective of producing a return of 7.25 percent. Although the plan aims to produce this level of return over most three to five year periods, there have been periods in the past, 1973-1975 and 2000-2003, when a weak market environment made these levels of returns unattainable. However, in unusually robust environments, such as 1994-1999, it was possible to achieve returns above the long-term objective.

The returns are compound annual returns for one, two, three and five years. For example, if the fund were up 6 percent in the current year and 8 percent in the prior year, the one-year return would be 6 percent and the compound annual return for two years would be 7 percent. While return information is provided for shorter time periods, the three and five year periods are more meaningful since the North Carolina Retirement System is a long-term investor.
