Nathan O'Berry

February 23, 1929 - January 6, 1932

Nathan O'Berry was appointed by Governor 0. Max Gardner to fill the unexpired term of Ben Lacy. He, too, died in office before having the opportunity to seek re-election. O'Berry was a successful businessman, having made a fortune in the lumber business before his appointment to the Commission for the State Hospital for Colored Insane in Goldsboro. He served as chairman of this Commission from 1925 until 1929 and his achievements were so significant that a new building there, the O'Berry Center, and subsequently the entire complex, was named for him. He also served on the Advisory Committee for the Caswell Training Center and in 1926 was appointed to the State Educational Commission. 1
